Evil Eye Talisman

Explanation of the Evil Eye and the Talisman that wards it off.
From Wikipedia:
"In many beliefs, a person—otherwise not malefic in any way—can harm adults, children, livestock or possessions, simply by looking at them with envy. The word "evil" is somewhat misleading in this context, because it suggests an intentional "curse" on the victim. A better understanding of the term "evil eye" can be gained from the old English word for casting the evil eye, namely "overlooking", implying that the gaze has remained focused on the coveted object, person, or animal for too long.......
Attempts to ward off the curse of the evil eye has resulted in a number of talismans in many cultures. As a class, they are called "apotropaic" (Greek for "prophylactic" or "protective," literally: "turns away") talismans, meaning that they turn away or turn back harm.

Disks or balls, consisting of concentric blue and white circles (usually, from inside to outside, dark blue, light blue, white, dark blue) representing an evil eye are common apotropaic talismans in the Middle East, found on the prows of Mediterranean boats and elsewhere; in some forms of the folklore, the staring eyes are supposed to bend the malicious gaze back to the sorcerer."

My Evil Eye Talisman's are made for the feeling of protection. They are filled with good Mojo- no evil intents. Each piece made with love and light heartedness!

These protective pendants are my artistic interpretation, not just blue concentric circles - but all sorts of colors and designs yet still obviously an Evil Eye Talisman.

Jersey Shore Juried Art Show (April 9 - May 13).

So I've made it to all those openings and I'm now working on my second tile. Greed. I photo transferred an image on a hundred dollar bill onto some lavendar glass. Here's you sneak peak !

A snippet of Green with Envy

Here's a snippet of my first tile for the book I am co-authoring (with many other artists). When I'm making, what I call Mosaic Fused Glass pieces, I spend time sorting through my glass, picking out the colors that please me and then I just start cutting. I cut squares, rectangles,etc. I just spend time cutting a lot of glass and then I sit back and start placing them together on the base glass. I start layering. Sometimes the very first design I work through is perfect. Sometimes I play with the glass a long time, changing the pieces and moving them around. After a while, there comes a moment, when it feels just right and I stop. Sometimes I walk away for a while and come back. It's rare I change anything after I've walked away but every once in a while, I'll think it's too green or too yellow or whatever, or a shape won't look right and I'll replace it with different shapes or colors.

It's like a puzzle that I'm making as I go. After I get to a certain point, the precut pieces of glass left aren't what I need, so I start cutting specifically for that space on the base.

I love leaving the glass at least a little lumpy. That is to say, once I've done my design and I have glued everything down. I put it into the kiln at a very slow, slow program. I set the program so that it rises to about 1250 - 1300 degress depending on the project and then comes back down to room temperature very slowly. This typically takes close to 24 hours depending on the project. I'm rather obsessive about this. I want to make sure the glass retains it's integrity. I don't want to worry about thermal shock or any future problems with stress or weakness in the glass. I purposely set my program so the glass will not full fuse. Full fuse, means that I allow it to melt down to one dimension. I like my glass to be lumpy! People who view it seem to have an irresistible urge to run their fingers over the lumpy texture. And there you have it, a snippet of the first tile!

I have recently been asked to be one of several co-authors of a book, based on my glass wall art. I'm so excited!!! Whooo hooooo!! I will start blogging a little bit about it as I go. I have an art journal, where I try to write down my ideas - so for the book, I've decided to work on a piece that I've been thinking about for a long time. Several years ago, I was inspired by another artist's interpretation of this common theme. The way I am making it, will require 7 glass "tiles". Each tile representing a separate idea but work together as a whole. I will post a snippet of the first tile tomorrow...Stay tuned. Forgive me for being a little vague, if I give the whole idea away, there would be no point to publishing my work in the book!

Classes in Warm Glass

I teach both privately (in Toms River)and throughout the state of New Jersey in various locations. To name just a few:

Warm Glass:
The term warm glass refers to fusing, slumping, kiln formed, and other glass processes which take place at high temperatures in a special oven called a kiln.

Glass fusing is the process of using a special hot oven- called a kiln, to join together pieces of layered glass. If you apply heat to glass, it will soften. Typically, as the kiln reaches temperatures between 1200-1400(F) degrees, the glass will become more fluid and flow together. Two or more pieces of glass will melt together.

Bending and shaping glass using the high heat of a kiln is usually referred to as slumping. A mold is used to cause glass to take on the shape of a bowl or a similar object. Melting glass frit (very small pieces of glass) into a mold inside a kiln is called kiln forming or depending on the process, pate de verre. Kiln forming tends to be more complicated than fusing and slumping.

Flameworking is a contemporary term for Lampworking. Both are names for the same ancient art form. Flameworking is the ancient art of manipulating molten glass in front of a torch (fueled by propane and oxygen). Mapp gas torches without oxygen may also be used.

My apologies for taking so long to write or "show and tell" my new creations. I don't think I will forget the date I posted above, for a long time. I was involved in a Hit & Run automobile accident (as opposed to a hit and run mugging-LOL).

Has anyone seen a Ford F250 Truck (newer model) with dark paint (it was dark and raining that night- I have no idea of the color) with damage to it's front end, driver side? I would guess the person driving lives in or near Toms River, NJ.

I was coming home after picking up my art work in Long Branch (about an 80 mile round trip) and about 150 feet from my driveway- the truck crossed the center line and came at me head on. YIKES! He was right on top of me when he crossed the line- I reacted as quickly as possible, yanked my steering wheel to the right to avoid a head on collision. He didn't realize he was on the wrong side until immediately before collision - so has he swerved back into his lane, he connected with my driver's side back panel. I lost control of my Prius and slammed into a telephone pole.

Witnesses (thank goodness there were some) said they heard two LOUD Bangs. Once when the truck connected with me and another when I connected with the pole.

I'm thinking of getting photos of the pole and making art- any suggestions?

In any case, it's almost been a month, so I am doubtful the police will catch this person. I took an ambulence ride to Community Medical Center and fortunately escaped with only minor injuries. A tear in the muscle of my right arm (maybe when I flew my arms over my face just before impact- maybe the airbag hit my arm with such force to cause the tear) and a lot of bruises. Lower back and neck are sore- I was jolted in two directions, so no surprise there.

As Gilda Radnar ( I loved her!) used to say "It's always something, If it's not one thing, it's another...."

So drive safely and defensively! And if you see a truck with damage to it's front driver side headlight, bumper or fender- call the Toms River Police Dept @ 732-349-0150

As I was walking past my kitchen counter this morning, I noticed two very small pieces of paper. In my last art project (photo in my last blog entry), I had been digging through magazines, newspapers, phone books, old books, etc trying to find the words I needed to complete my collage. I cut each word out and pasted it to the canvas - kind of ransom note style. Well my clean up was a bit spotty and two words were under the kitchen counter. YOU and stuff. I found this hysterical. Ok, so I'm easily amused. :) So I grabbed my camera and giggled while I was snapping away.

And so I introduce to you:

While doing some "spring" cleaning, I stumbled upon a couple of old, yellowed pieces of paper. Written on those pages, some poems I wrote when I was 23. (1986) Pleeeeease... Don't do the math. Unfortunately the man I had been dating - was not treating me very well and the relationship was short. Thank Goodness. I'm sure we all have had our share of bad relationships in our youth. I read one of these old poems and laughed. I've always dealt with my "issues" with humor. Humor has gotten me through many hard times. Proof that art is an excellent and healthy response to life's drama. Instead of doing something I would regret, I got my frustrations, anger and hurt out with a poem. And now, 24 years later (yes, I'm ready to admit it) finding the poem again, inspired me to put it to canvas! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. There was another poem there too, I may tackle it later.

Have I Ever Set Myself on Fire?

It is a popular question. It is asked almost every time I have a live [is there any other kind?] demonstration. The first time I used a torch for welding metal was a few years ago at one of my favorite art galleries (SICA- Shore Institute of Contemporary Art). Indeed, I did set myself on fire. Hot, molten metal fell to the ground and my co-conspirators were whooping, pointing and literally jumping up and down. I thought, "Awe, they like what I'm doing". LOL. Then my leg and foot were starting to feel rather HOT. The bottom of my jeans were on fire! I jumped up and down and put it out. I melted a hole in the bottom of my boot. Very exciting. We all asked for a lesson in using the fire extinguisher after that.

As far as using my glass / flameworking torch- I've burned myself many times. If a glass rod is not annealed well (this happens before I receive it) or if I heat the glass too quickly, thermal shock* will cause a mini explosion of glass. Sending small pieces flying through the air. Sometimes landing on my arms, hands, face, neck....you get the picture. I have ruined many shirts. My arms look very freckly. Those aren't freckles! You get used to it. If you play with glass and fire, it's bound to happen at some point, no matter how careful you are. As you can imagine, I've taken special measures to fireproof my
studio.

I wish that was Money FOR Art :) but I've been working on a project that I've mentioned here before; about Advertising, our current culture of ME, ME, ME, and the outlandish spending that precipitated our current recession. Those cultural reflections made me also think about our news media. Is it me, or does it seem that the news covers tabloid stories more often then "real" news? I mean, I like the juicy tidbits, I'm human, but not when it becomes the entire 30-60 minutes of coverage. I like to refer to what I think is a cultural phenomenon of our time, as: Tabloid Nation {copyright}. I have so many ideas, some of which are in my head and many of which I have preliminary drawings of, that I have decided to make it a series (or work on it til I'm bored and start on another fabulous, can't resist, idea).

Oh look, fluffy bunny. Yes yes, I'm ADHD [Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder], which I think is partially chemical imbalance, part hormonal- I've arrived at the Peri-menopausal portion of my life and part, environmental. I could argue that I don't see it as a "disorder" exactly and that my approach to life in some ways, is a gift, but I'll save that for another day. So back to environmental/cultural influences- Go! Go! Go. We need more things, we need more money, we need more work to buy the things we don't need. Ok, not so true now that we are in recession. Now we just need work to pay our mortgage.

And finally, I'm back to the title of this post! [fooooo-cus, focus!] I want to actually put money in my art. After reading several paragraphs at: http://www.usmint.gov/consumer/index.cfm?flash=yes&action=busguide&sub=Altered
and nearly falling asleep, I was surprised to find that this isn't illegal. As long as I don't try to pass my art off as actual US currency......my art would be very hard to put into the cash register...

Welding Metal- I want to try EVERYTHING!

This is a metal representation of my instructor. He thought I made him too fat, but I wasn't making him large to represent his "fat" (he wasn't fat at all), I was representing his "presence" which was large :) He was a good instructor. I was the only woman in the class, and the only one that was learning in order to make art. Everyone there was learning a new skill either for their current job or to add it to their resume to get a job. It was a very interesting experience and a peek into generally a "man's world".

I recently took a weekend PMC Certification class with Manhattan artist Vera Lightstone. What an incredible treat- I love her work and her studio & apt combo [an end unit] was to die for: 2 walls of huge windows, an unbeatable view of sunset over the Hudson, enormous amount of space for NYC and only 3 blocks from Penn Station! PMC- Precious Metal Clay. An art form that has been around for about 10 years now- you work with clay and it's ease of molding. Once you've completed your desired design, you put it in the kiln and all the clay particles burn off. What you are left with is FINE Silver [.999 as opposed to Sterling Silver which is .925]. Of course I can't wait to create some fine pieces of silver/glass. I'll post some photos soon!

As days go by, dozens of ideas roll around in my head for future projects in glass or mixed media. I'm really excited about one in particular (at this moment- I have been known to bounce all over) regarding the cultural/societal themes of McMansions, Credit Card debt ratio, and Advertising to the ME generation. I've always loved Marketing and really enjoy a well done commercial, especially if the commercial utilized performance art, visual art etc and well, really, don't they all?! The Bayonet Farm Art & Music Festival will take place noon-5 p.m. Sept. 13 at Bayonet Farm, 41 Middletown Road, Holmdel (rain or shine).

Artists will sell original artwork and compete in a plein air competition and juried art exhibition judged by Holmdel gallery owner James Yarosh, and Fine Art Connoisseur magazine editor Peter Trippi. There will also be demonstrations of raku, flameworking and water media/mixed media.

Musical performers include the Brookdale Jazz Quartet, Monmouth Civic Chorus, acoustic blues guitarist Elliott Fischer, and rock band Late 4 Lunch. Local artists include the Celadon Youth Ensemble, and the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Youth Association dance troupe. There will also be readings and films by Holmdel High School students, and a puppet show. Food will be provided by the Kimisis Greek Church, Holmdel.

I would love to hear from other artists- How do you stay organized? I am constantly trying to market and exhibit and demo and create and teach .....yikes! I find myself caught up in the business of art and then must pull some all-nighters for some passionate creating to keep up with all the ideas I want to do and have them done in time to exhibit, etc. I could easily hire someone 20 hours a week to just do administrative work. Anyone have tips on how you do it?

Yep - I did it again. This time I'm keeping it. I think I started this blog about 2 years ago and really didn't do much with it in the beginning. I've changed the name three times and I think this last one is / fits me the best. :) The first was An Artist's Life or something like that, then Glass Fanatic, which is true, but Playing with Fire, appeals to the kid in me and it's exactly what I do :) Mom always said "don't play with fire" and "stop doing that or you'll put someone's eye out", so I posted some of my glass eye balls here. Going home is always bittersweet. Even though I went to grade school, high school and college in Indiana, I've lived longer in Jersey than I lived anywhere else. And so Indiana feels like home, but then again, it doesn't, Jersey does....My Mom is still in Indiana and I had a great time with her. I wish she lived closer. I got to see some of my high school friends - what a great time we had. So many good people. Now I'm chomping at the bit to make some art and I can't wait to get home (to Jersey) to see my husband and daughter.

Time for the Gala Opening!

I've been thinking a lot lately about the professional side of art. The intense frustrations, what sometimes seem insurmountable problems, the excitement of a new idea, the exciting process of engineering and planning the new piece, the creative process in general, the long hours - the 24/7 days .....and I started laughing about how I used to think an Artists' life was so glamorous. GLAM......not! Don't get me wrong, sometimes there is some glamour, but the majority of the process is full of S T R U G G L E. LOL.

Tonight is the opening gala for the new AtlantiCare Cancer Center. While I am very happy that this amazing building and the caring people it holds, is finally open to help the many, many people dealing with Cancer, I am selfishly sad that the opening will not have my piece on show. We decided it needed a different hanging system and there was not enough time to rehang it with the new system. So the opening is bittersweet. I'd like to think that my art will help someone feel better, will help lift their spirits, bring a smile to their face, inspire, heal- lofty goals I guess but wow, it would make me feel great if it helped someone feel a little better. I would also like to further my career- to gain exposure for my work. Ironic that it is a Chronic illness that allows me to allow myself to be an artist. This project in particular, makes me feel I have come full circle. And now a new circle or path will begin. I sense it. I'm tired but I'm ready.

Hanging the Tree

Well yesterday was a nerve racking but exciting day. I was anxious to get The Healing Tree hung at AtlantiCare and they graciously sent over some great guys to help me. My friend Sally came along to help keep me calm and sane! It was a beautiful experience for me -watching it go up. Looking at it spread out on my floor- standing on one of my bar stools for height/distance, just didn't have the same effect! So I pulled out my camera. Dennis changed the batteries for me, so I would be sure to be prepared for 100's of shots! Aaaaand, the darn thing didn't work- it's broken. So no photos! The opening is June 18th, I will have to get shots of it then or ask their professional photographer to share one of his shots with me. The Monmouth Museum is beginning the third season of its New Jersey Emerging Artists Series in the Nilson Gallery with an exhibition of works in glass by artist Yvonne Yaar.

"Switchboard Without an Operator"

Yaar is especially interested in the medium of glass, intrigued by its transparency, color and light-reflecting qualities.

She creates both glass jewelry and wall art/sculpture. Each work is made in front of a torch, with a kiln, or with various tools used to manipulate molten glass. She favors organic, asymmetrical shapes and sacred geometry. Her art incorporates themes of motherhood, love of nature, humor and addiction in her work. She has lived on three different continents and believes her exposure to different cultures has also played an important role in her art.

Yaar will share insights on her work in a gallery talk and give a demonstration at the museum 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 15. This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required, since seating is limited. Call the museum at 732- 747-2266 to register and for additional information. The exhibit will run through April 26.

"Yellow Cityscape"

The New Jersey Emerging Artists Series is an ongoing program for artists who have not previously held a one-person show.

The artists selected represent the diversity of talent in the state and demonstrate their creativity in a wide variety of media. Six artists working in a variety of media are selected each year for a month-long exhibition in the Nilson Gallery.

The Monmouth Museum is located on the Brookdale Community College campus, Newman Springs Road, in Lincroft.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $7.

Some of you might remember that Red Bluefish was a commissioned piece. It was not what my client had hoped for- I think sometimes your expectations get in the way of appreciating a different idea. Ironically, I have gotten more enthusiastic compliments on this piece than I ever dreamed, from the general public AND it was the first piece to sell at the Monmouth Museum show! One door shuts and another window opens, I'm working on a seahorse now :)

This past week, I taught a "Funky Pins" workshop for the Monmouth Teen Art Festival. What a blast! We used stiff backing products as a base and taped, pasted, hot glue gunned various glittery, magazine, newspaper, buttons, puzzles and other items to them to make FUNKY collage art. I can't take credit for the idea, I believe it was the brain storm of Sandy Taylor, Art Education Director for the Monmouth County Arts Council. So as I taught the young artists how to make the pins, I made several of my own. I will post images of my two favorite pins soon :)

39th Annual Monmouth Festival of the Arts Takes PlaceMarch 28- April 1 2009
The 39th Annual Monmouth Festival of the Arts, the region’s largest juried art show, begins on
Saturday, March 28and extends through Wednesday, April 1 at Monmouth Reform Temple, 332
Hance Avenue in Tinton Falls. During these five days, the Monmouth Reform temple is
transformed into a professionally appointed art museum. In addition to the displays of more than 3,000 paintings, crafts and jewelry, festival activities include artist demonstrations, children's programs, and evening series art lectures.

Tickets can be purchased for a one day event at $8 for adults ($5 for students and senior
citizens.) Or a series ticket can be purchased for $18, entitling the holder to attend the show and
its programs all week long. Proceeds from the Festival benefit the Monmouth Reform Temple;
however, the show has grown to become a preeminent cultural community event in its promotion of the arts and art education.

The festival week begins with the elegant Gala Reception on Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m.
Gala goers can meet and converse with the artists displaying in the show. They also have a first
chance opportunity to purchase the show’s art while enjoying wine, hors d’oeuvres and desserts.
Tickets for the Gala are $65 at the doors or can be ordered for $60 by calling 732-747-8278 or
732-747-9365. Gala ticket holdersalso qualify as patron supporters of the Festival allowing
themto attend the show and its special programs during the duration of the Festival.
During the week, area art lovers can enjoy the variety of art on display from more than 200
artists who hail from all over the Northeast. They can also attend several workshops given by the
artists on the technique of their craft as well asan evening artists’ lecture series.Sunday during
the Festival, is family day featuringchildren’s craft workshops and entertainment. The Festival
also offers an educational symposium for teachers to earn continuing education credits. A special student artist display heralds the artwork of 11th grade students who competed for awards earlier in the year at a Festival sponsored student competition and workshop.

Throughout the Festival, Le Petit Café provides soups, lunches, light suppers, snacks and desserts to hungry patrons.

This year’s Show Designer is Maureen Welton, who brings to the Monmouth Festival of the Arts
her vast experience in art and design. She served as MFA Show Designer from 1996 to 2002,
after working several years as Assistant Show Designer. For more than 20 years, Ms. Welton
owned and operated ‘Yesterdears’ Antique Shop in Rockland County, NY, where she managed
inventory, coordinated displays, and designed windows. Her artwork has appeared at the New
York City Parks Art Exhibition in Manhattan, as well as various galleries in NY. She will be
assisted in the MFA show by Jackie O’Keefe.

Group tours, led by artists or our trained docents, can be pre-arranged for Monday, Tuesday or
Wednesday, and are available for schools (with adult supervision), seniors or other groups.

The Monmouth Festival of the Arts is hosted by Monmouth Reform Temple and is made
possible, in part, by the Monmouth County Arts Council through funding from the Monmouth

Red Blue Fish II - Pate de Verre

I love this piece and wish that you all could see it in person. The light shining through it gives it an awesome effect. I melted it in two layers/ two stages and purposely did not melt the second layer completely and so you can see a "pebbly" look under the surface of the glass. I need to dremble the edges just a tad and it's finished. I'm trying to engineer the appropriate way to hang it. Wrap two bands of metal around it perhaps- since I made the back pebbly, I can't hang it the way I traditionally do. I also think it would be best to put light behind it. Any suggestions?

YAAR School of Glass

Yvonne offers classes and private instruction in fusing and flameworking (lampworking). Flameworking is the ancient art of manipulating molten glass in front of a torch. Fusing- designing layers of glass and then melting them or fusing them together inside of a kiln.

Flameworking. Classes are all inclusive- meaning they include all the equipment needed, glass used, torch time, safety googles, and annealing. Annealing means that I will be putting your finished glass pieces in a kiln and you will be picking them up at a later date. The next day is fine- I put that in bold so you won't be disappointed about not taking it home the same day you make them. Annealing is important - When you are working with glass in the torch, you are causing stress. Thermal shock is less likely to happen if you anneal your work. Annealing promotes strength & longevity in your work. Everything can also be mailed, there is a $7 fee for shipping and handling.

You will need to dress in cotton clothing and it should be clothing that you don't care about. Sometimes the glass pops and little bits may land on your clothing and burn it. Long sleeves are a good idea. The studio tends to be cool, but the torch and kiln heat things up quickly. Long hair should be tied back.

I am very generous with glass selection- I don't want to inhibit your creativity, but at the same time, certain glasses have chemical reactions with other glasses and I try to lead you away from things that will end up turning smoky, snooty grey and yucky! One thing I am stingy on sharing- I give out only some purples & no pink- these colors are very difficult to work with for the beginner and they cost 10+ times more than most colors (the people who manufacture it ALSO have a hard time making it- hence their losses are included in the cost!) I have A LOT of glass. So no worries, still more colors to choose from then you'll be able to use in one class!

REMEMBER- THis is fun! I've learned that some people's expectations aren't realistic and they are too hard on themselves! Keep fun in mind and relax and you will make something with which you will be proud! Most people walk away with at least 4 or 5 beads that they like- depending on which class they took. I try to have a 5 min break for every hour- to stretch, eat carrots ( I usually have a simple munchie available) and take bathroom breaks. I recommend the 2 or 3 hour class. The one hour is a tease! Glass is an expensive art form and I try to accommodate those with smaller budgets by offering the one hour class and also by offering that people team up. I frequently will teach the longer class with two students sharing the time, the torch and the expense!

If possible, start spinning pencils with your fingers- both hands. When you make beads in front of a torch, you hold a mandrel parallel to the work bench and the glass gets put on the mandrel. While the glass falls onto the mandrel, you slowly spin it with your fingers. As you add more glass, you will be spinning the mandrels and the glass rods in the flame of the torch to keep them warm and to prevent thermal shock. It helps to pratice a little- remember- do it with both hands.

It is soooo difficult to photograph glass. Here is an image of my current commission for a large slumped piece. I made the ceramic mold [see below on the right] first, which took several hours. This piece of glass is the second & third attempt (I put it through the kiln cycle twice) at slumping over the ceramic mold. I really like the outcome, I hope my client likes it too.

PLAYING FOR CHANGE is a movement uniting people all over the world through music and inspiration. It all began about seven years ago as my producing partner, Whitney Kroenke Burditt, and I assembled a group of like-minded people with cameras and a mobile recording studio. We embarked on a journey across the globe in search of music and human connections.

We started the journey with the idea that with an open mind and positive intentions we can find ways of uniting people as the human race. Music has always been the universal language and we followed its path from city streets to Native Indian reservations, African villages and the Himalayan Mountains. I could never have imagined that we would discover a world with so much love, hope and inspiration. In a world with so much focus on our differences I am proud to have discovered that people everywhere believe in creating a better world together.

Throughout our travels we created songs around the world such as “Stand By Me” and “One Love.” These songs and videos offer musicians who have never met in person the ability to collaborate and unite through the power of music. We also interviewed all of the musicians and learned stories of how music has helped to persevere through struggles all over the world. These collections of songs and interviews serve as a reminder of the power of the human spirit as well as a means of further illustrating our global collective conscience. We live in a world with way too many starving children and way too many warring nations. As a human race we come together for birth, and we come together for death, what brings us together in between is up to us. Stop and listen to the universal language of music and bring that positive energy with you everywhere we go.

The vision of PLAYING FOR CHANGE extends far beyond just music and film. We have established the Playing For Change Foundation to build music and art schools for kids around the world. We have recently returned from Gugulethu, South Africa where we constructed the first Playing For Change Music School. We plan to build many more schools, each equipped with cameras and a recording studio so supporters all over the world can watch recitals and performances in the schools we are building together. We can use these schools as sources of inspiration and a means of breaking down negative stereotypes among people everywhere. In the words of one of the artists featured in PLAYING FOR CHANGE, Vusi Mahlasela, “The world is immigrating into a global village, the question is how much do you want to belong.” Learn more about PLAYING FOR CHANGE, and together we can accomplish much more than we ever can apart.

So here is the second poem written the same afternoon while sitting in a park in Bloomington, IN, trying to laugh my way out of my depression and trying to figure out why I always fall for the WRONG guys....thankfully I did figure it out, but not until my early 30's.....everyone has their own learning curve I suppose and my art and who I am are derived from the culmination of all these experiences.

Is There a Mate for Me

Is there a mate for me,
One that won't mind how often I pee.

One that is fun enough to bounce me on his knee,
And has eyes the color of the Caribbean Sea.

I'm not interested in him to marry,
Nor his baby to carry.

Just looking for mutual respect and admiration,
Not salvation.

I keep trying to find this man, but all I do is get hurt,
Is it because I'm just not alert?

Hey, I was going through paperwork, slowly trying to get my house in order and I found two poems I wrote in Dec 1986. It was written while I was still in Bloomington attending Indiana University. The paper I'm copying from is the original- yellowed and tattered.

Monmouth Museum Emerging Artists 2008-2009

Primary Medium: Glass
Forms of Glass Art used: Flameworked, Fused, Kiln-formed and Slumped

As a child, I witnessed a demonstration of glass blowing. I have been mesmerized by glass ever since. In 2004, I followed a dream of working with glass. It was one of the bravest things I have ever done. I enjoy the challenge, thrill in it but also have my difficult days too. Creativity is not something that can be called upon by demand, it must be inspired. I am also constantly surprised by how much engineering is involved in my art. To me, the application of glass seems endless, only stopped by the limits of my own imagination. All that I see, feel and hear, influences what I do. My past, my present and perceived future. My art reflects all this and my philosophy on life.

A recent reflection on the affects that drugs and alcohol have had on my life, prompted me to work on a series of pieces that would convey how addiction has affected my life and the lives of those I love.

Addiction runs in my family on both sides. My great grandmother was an opium addict; there were alcoholics, and heroin addicts. I am not sure that I truly have the addiction gene. As a teenager and young adult, I was painfully introverted- alcohol helped me become more extroverted. Today, because I believe that sometimes I want to drink alcohol for the purpose of stress relief, I worry that it could turn into a habit. It is the knowledge of this desire for a “relief from reality” that gives me an awareness. This awareness keeps me from drinking on a regular basis. Happily I now get a “relief from reality” by immersing myself in art.

The alcohol and drug related experiences I’ve had, I believe have made me a very different person than I might have been. As is true about any human that lives long enough, I have had my share of pain and loss. As with most people, these difficult events affected who I am and how I perceive life. Art and humor are extremely important to me. They are my “coping skills”. Art and humor are therapeutic tools. Humor helps me to be grateful for what is good in my life. Art has been an important part of my life and a way I can express and reveal myself without taking a drink, a way to work through depression or express joy. My art is a look into my soul, a soul that has endured, overcome and triumphed. My art is my recovery.

Life as an Artist- Artist Statement

Ok, this is a blog, and everyone writes in 1st person. Why is it when we write an artist statement we are expected to write it in 3rd person? It never has made sense to me, but here is my artist statement:

Yvonne has loved glass since she was a little girl. It's sparkly, transparent, yet full of color- what's not to like?! She appreciates glass more than diamonds. Really. Melting diamonds in front of a torch is a bad thing. Putting them in a kiln isn't a good idea either. So where is the fun in diamonds?

She has lived on three continents and these experiences have affected her deeply. She feels this has played a role in her "out of the box" thinking.

She drives her husband crazy because she sees everything as art. You can't throw art away. When Yvonne does throw something away, she makes a point of announcing it to her husband, because she loves to see him smile. She feels blessed that he supports her addiction- oops-I mean passion for art.

Yvonne has taken classes at Salem Community College in Carney's Pt, NJ; one of the few entities in the USA that offers a Bachelor's Degree in Glass Art. She was on the Dean's list when she attended and she also took a class at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, NY. However, she is primarily self-taught. She has a BS from Indiana University in Interior Design, with a minor in Business Administration. She has exhibited and sold from multiple galleries, museums, and boutiques in the Tri-State area.
